Rogue Island Review: 80s Revenge, Neon Motels & a Hitman Who Did His Time — AXN BOX Insider

Eleven minutes, zero fat

Most short films ask for your patience. Rogue Island asks for eleven minutes and hands you a man with a grudge and a very short list. It lands on AXN BOX in two parts — a three-minute-forty-three opener and a seven-minute-fifty-three payoff — and it’s an 80s revenge thriller that understands the thing a lot of indie crime shorts forget: atmosphere is cheap, momentum is earned.

Both parts are free to watch on AXN BOX right now. No coins, no VIP gate.

1986, and a debt that never expired

The setup is lean. Fresh out of prison, a notorious Irish hitman walks back onto the streets with exactly one thing on his mind: revenge. Years earlier he was framed for the murder of his best friend. The men who put him away have had a long time to forget. He hasn’t.

That’s the whole engine, and it’s enough. No mythology, no origin story, no scene explaining what the audience can already feel. A man, a debt, and the men who owe it.

The motel, the neon, the mood

Rogue Island sets its pressure cooker against the neon glow of a forgotten roadside motel — and that single location choice carries an enormous amount of weight. Fluorescent light, wet asphalt, an empty parking lot after dark. It’s the visual grammar of eighties crime cinema, and it remains the cheapest production value in filmmaking when you know how to frame it.

It’s also why the 1986 setting isn’t nostalgia for its own sake. A pre-smartphone world is one where nobody is being tracked, nobody is being filmed, and a man who did his time can simply find you. Strip the technology out and the tension goes back where it belongs: inside the room.

Why the two-part drop works

Splitting a short into two parts could easily be a gimmick. Here it’s structure. Part 1 sets the debt; Part 2 collects on it. That break buys the audience a held breath — and it gives the ending somewhere to land.

Shorts don’t fail because they’re short. They fail because they spend their runtime clearing their throat. This one doesn’t.

Ryan Justice, and the case for the retro crime short

Rogue Island is directed by Ryan Justice, and it sits in a lane AXN BOX keeps proving has a real audience: the 80s revenge film. Guns, mafia, betrayal, loyalty, a hitman with a code — the tag list on the title reads like a genre syllabus, and that’s a compliment. Fans of this corner of cinema know exactly what they came for, and the film knows too.

It’s also the strongest argument for independent action shorts in general. A feature needs a year and a budget. A short needs a location, a lead, and a reason. Rogue Island found all three.

Where it sits on AXN BOX

Rogue Island is currently trending in the top ten on the platform, and it’s a good entry point into a catalog that now runs the full action spectrum. If the revenge-thriller lane is your thing, Kill Box, Zero Starz and Special Delivery are single-episode short films you can knock out in one sitting. Want something longer? Followers turns social-media stalking into a three-part nightmare, while Alien Siege and Augmented push the same tension into sci-fi combat across five and four episodes.

There’s horror-tinged territory too, with Ouija and Quietly into the Night, plus Black & White for anyone who wants to make the call themselves in a choose-your-own-adventure story. And if you like knowing what’s coming: Raven — Operation Blackout and The Commando and the Rebel are both queued up next.
